SDL Tridion 2013 SP1 has arrived, so time for a quick highlight of what's new.
Here are a few of the bigger additions to 2013 SP1, for a full list, please refer to the documentation here [login required]
Import Export Service
Content Porter has long been the tool of choice for moving items between environments, and deploying updated Tridion items. Now it has been updated, and integrated into the core content management system, in the form of a new import export service. The service replaces the old server side component of Content Porter, and provides a web service, complete with API. This means custom code could be written to automate deployments between environments. A Content Porter client still exists (Content Porter 2013 SP1,) but it is just that, a client, which interacts with Tridion via the import export web service.
Search updated from Verity to Lucene with the Tridion 2011 release, and is now receiving a refresh. Search is still Lucene based (upgraded to v.4.3), but it is now hosted within a Tomcat application server rather than Jetty. This gives search improved performance and reliability in Tridion 2013 SP1.
Component Sync has been missed since the re-architecture from Tridion 2009 to 2011. Part of the power tools in 2009, it did not make it as a main stream power tool for the 2011 or 2013 releases. Now in Tridion 2013 SP1 component synchronization is exposed in both the TOM.NET and Core Service API.
Publication Target Decommissioning
Publication Target decommissioning is a welcome addition. It allows you to take a publication target offline, without worrying about unpublishing everything first. In the past, if you did not unpublish everything, you could be left with items that could not be deleted as they were published to a legacy publication target. Publication target decommissioning is currently only available via the API and Core Service.
SDL Tridion 2013 SP1 includes several updates to the user interface, including updated look & feel and navigation controls.
Experience Manager has also benefited from a few updates, most notably, improved editing of multi-value embedded fields. You can now add, remove and re-order as well as simple edits available in the previous version.
Context Engine Cartridge
The context engine cartridge which provides insight into your website users, and the device they are using to view your website, used to be a separate product. In Tridion 2013 SP1 it is integrated in to the product.
Audience Manager Web Service
In Tridion 2013 SP1 Audience Manager comes with a web service, allowing you to import and export contacts to and from external systems. A very useful addition to keep CRM systems in sync, and maximize the power of Audience Manager.
There are many more incremental improvements to various aspects of the content management system, which are outlined in the documentation mentioned above.
I am looking forward to getting my hands on the new version, and performing an upgrade in the coming weeks.
